Koh Samui for Australian Retirees
For Australian pensioners retiring to Thailand, Koh Samui offers a climate just like northern Australia, a relaxed island lifestyle and private healthcare close at hand. Flights connect through Bangkok and Singapore, so returning home for family events remains very manageable.
Moving overseas affects your pension, tax position, and access to Medicare. Koh Samui Retirement Village has prepared these answers to help you plan.
Will My Age Pension Change if I Move to Koh Samui?
It may. The key factor is your Australian Working Life Residence, which counts the years you lived in Australia from age 16 until you reached Age Pension age.
Here is what generally happens:
| When | What changes |
| The day you leave | Energy Supplement ends and concession cards are cancelled. From 20 September 2026, the Pension Supplement also stops on departure. |
| Up to 26 weeks away | Base pensions are normally paid at the usual rate. |
| After 26 weeks | Full rate continues with 35 or more years of working life residence. Fewer years means a proportional rate. |
For example, if you have 28 years of working life residence, you will receive 28/35ths of the standard base rate after the first six months. Long-term overseas pensioners are paid four-weekly.
Thailand and Australia do not have a social security agreement. It is usually easier to be receiving the Age Pension before you leave. Notify Services Australia of your departure through myGov.
Which Thai Visa Should I Apply For?
- Australians aged 50 and over can apply for a Thai retirement visa. The choice depends mainly on your savings and income.
- A Non-Immigrant O retirement extension suits most people. You must show 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account or a monthly income of 65,000 baht, and renew it each year in Thailand. This route doesn’t require insurance.
- You apply for the O-A visa in Australia; it lasts one year and requires health insurance with 3,000,000 baht in total cover.
- Australian citizens are one of fourteen nationalities eligible for the O-X visa, which allows a stay of up to ten years. You need 3 million baht in a Thai bank, or 1.8 million baht with yearly income of at least 1.2 million baht.
- Retirees with passive income of US$80,000 or more may prefer the ten-year Long-Term Resident visa.
Is My Superannuation Taxed in Thailand?
Super drawn after age 60 is normally tax-free in Australia, but Thai tax rules work differently. Anyone in Thailand for 180 days or more in a calendar year is treated as a Thai tax resident. Since 2024, Thailand can tax money a resident brings in from abroad, based on when it was earned.
The Australia–Thailand tax treaty may reduce or remove double taxation depending on the income. Ask an accountant who works with Australian expatriates to review your super, pension and investment income before you move money across.
What About Medicare?
Medicare doesn’t cover treatment in Thailand, and reciprocal health agreements don’t apply here. Take out international health insurance before you move, and check what it covers as you get older.
On Koh Samui, Bangkok Hospital Samui and Thai International Hospital are just minutes from the village. Residents also have 24-hour on-site service, plus nursing care, residential care, and medical services when they need them.
Life at Koh Samui Retirement Village
The village is set in the Bophut hills on the north coast, surrounded by coconut groves and a lake. The airport is 12 minutes away, and every day shopping is nearby. Fisherman’s Village and Central Festival in Chaweng are a short drive for dining and shopping.
Each resident has a private villa held under a 30-year ownership lease. A restaurant, pool and film evenings bring residents together, and guests can stay overnight. One company developed and operates the village, and its founders have 44 years of experience in the retirement care industry.
